Welcome!

The Department of Earth Science of Tohoku University aims to explore the mysteries of the 4.6 billion-year-old Earth and solar system to understand its origin, structure, and evolution. The Earth is closely related to humanity’s problems and issues, including global environmental changes, resource and energy demands, and natural disasters. We investigate and provide a comprehensive understanding of the past and present Earth based on multidisciplinary research of geology, mineralogy/petrology, geophysics, geochemistry, and geography to build a better future.

We explore the past of the Earth and Solar system by investigating the information recorded in the “materials” that consist of the Earth and the Solar system through field observation and laboratory analyses as well as explore the present Earth through direct observation. Laboratory experimental simulations that reproduce these materials and phenomena are combined with the material investigations.

Department of Earth Science offers graduate and undergraduate programs related to geology, mineralogy/petrology, geophysics, geochemistry, and geography. More than 200 undergraduate and graduate students are receiving education and investigating the Earth and Solar system with more than 40 faculty members.
